5 Reasons to Join the Knights of Columbus

Are you looking for a way to be more active in your faith?

Many of the men who join say that they were tired of just sitting in the pew once a week. Or they aren’t satisfied with what the world has to offer. They’re looking for something more.

If you’re looking for that something more, the Knights of Columbus is a good place to find it.

Here are 5 reasons why you should consider joining the Knights of Columbus.

1. Put your faith into action

Consider our Lord’s teaching on the judgment of nations (Matt 25:34-45)

“Then the King will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’

Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”

Are you satisfied that you have done these things for the Lord? If not, joining the Knights of Columbus is an excellent way to practice your faith outside of church.

2. Become friends with your fellow Catholic men

Consider St. Paul’s mark of a true Christian from Romans 12:9-11:

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord.

And in Proverbs, we read: “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” (v. 27:17). Do you feel like it’s difficult to find friend who hold the same beliefs as you?

The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal group. By joining, you’ll meet men who hold the same Catholic values that you do. Making good friends will strengthen your faith and your parish.

3. Protect your family

Our order was created to care for the families of members who lose their primary wage-earner. Members of the Knights of Columbus have access to excellent life insurance. Men who join can rest assured that their families will be provided for when they pass away.

Already have life insurance through another provider? Consider that when your life insurance is with the Knights of Columbus, your money will not go to organizations that fund or support immoral activities such as abortion.

While insurance is a benefit that you may receive, you don’t need to enroll in order to join the Knights.

4. Strengthen your parish

Parishes with less active men shrink. Parishes with more active men thrive.

The statistics on male participation in their faith are dismal. (Source)

  • Only 29% of men believe that weekly mass attendance is “very important.”
  • Almost half of Catholic men do not engage in a routine of prayer; praying only “occasionally or sometimes” or “seldom or never.”
  • 83% of Catholic men rarely or never participate in a parish activity outside of the Mass.

By joining the Knights of Columbus, you can help unite the men of our parish in fully living their faith.

5. Evangelize the community

Pope Francis urges us to get out and bring Christ to the community:

Let us go forth, then, let us go forth to offer everyone the life of Jesus Christ…. If something should rightly disturb us and trouble our consciences, it is the fact that so many of our brothers and sisters are living without the strength, light and consolation born of friendship with Jesus Christ…

Through charitable work and spiritual activity, Knights unleash the Gospel. Join us, and help spread the Catholic faith to the Blue Water community.
